What overlap do you have with Canadian working hours?
Pakistan is UTC+5 with no daylight saving, so it sits 8–9 hours ahead of Atlantic, 9–10 ahead of Eastern, 10–11 ahead of Central, 11–12 ahead of Mountain, and 12–13 ahead of Pacific — and 7.5–8.5 ahead of Newfoundland, which keeps its own half-hour offset. The gap closes by an hour when Canada moves to daylight time, since I don't shift. I keep my evenings free for the overlap: 8am–12pm in Toronto and Montreal, 9am–1pm in Halifax, 7am–11am in Winnipeg, 6am–10am in Calgary, and the early Vancouver morning, where 7–9am PT works for standups. Everything else runs async, so finished work is waiting when you start.
We're spread across several provinces already. Does that make this harder?
Usually easier, because you have already solved most of it. A team with people in Halifax and Vancouver is running four and a half hours of internal spread and has already built the habits that make it work — written decisions, async updates, meetings that are scheduled rather than assumed. Adding someone in Pakistan extends a pattern you operate rather than introducing a new one, which is a materially different proposition from a fully co-located team hiring its first remote engineer. In practice my overlap window sits inside your own working day at every point on that spread, so there is no province that only ever hears from me in writing.
What does a Canadian company need in place to pay a contractor abroad?
A services agreement and an invoice, in most cases. I work as an independent contractor supplying services from Pakistan rather than as an employee, and the work is performed outside Canada — which is the distinction your accountant will care about, since the Canadian reporting forms for non-resident work, such as the T4A-NR, generally concern services rendered inside the country. Whether anything applies to a particular arrangement is their determination rather than mine. Contracts run either directly, with milestones and invoicing on completion, or through Upwork where escrow and payment protection sit with the platform.
Do you quote in Canadian dollars?
Quotes are issued in US dollars, and the starting figure noted below is USD. Most Canadian businesses already buy software and services in USD, so this is usually familiar rather than an obstacle — but it does mean the CAD amount depends on the rate the day you pay, which is why I won't print a Canadian figure here that would be stale by the time you read it. The scope and the price are fixed in writing after the intro call and do not move mid-project. Payment is by bank transfer, Stripe, or through Upwork. GST/HST treatment on services imported from outside Canada depends on your own registration and is worth a word with your accountant rather than something I can settle for you.
How does an engagement start?
With a short intro call — 30 minutes to talk through what you're building and whether I'm the right fit. If we're aligned, you get a written, scoped proposal covering deliverables, architecture, and timeline. I respond to every enquiry within 24 hours.
How does communication work day to day?
Written updates as work progresses, a demo of working software every week, and async-first communication over email or Slack. You always know what was done, what's next, and what's blocking — without scheduling a meeting to find out.
How do contracts and invoicing work?
A straightforward services agreement with milestones, or a contract through Upwork if you prefer escrow and their payment protection. Payment by bank transfer, Stripe, or through Upwork.
Who owns the code and intellectual property?
You do. Full IP ownership transfers to you — source code, documentation, and infrastructure configuration. Repositories are set up under your organisation's control from the start wherever possible.
What does an engagement typically cost?
Most engagements start around $5K; smaller well-scoped work is considered case-by-case. After the intro call you get a fixed, written quote — no surprises mid-project.
